Finally Some Credit Card Love for Canada

For the most part, Canada tends to get left out on the credit card sign-up bonus bonanza, but every once in a while a great offer comes around.

The current RBC British Airways Visa promotion is one of those offers.

But why on earth would I want British Airways AviosMiles (or whatever they're called)?

British Airways' Avios program works on a distance and segment basis. The longer your flight, the more points it costs; and the more individual flights your itinerary has, the more points it costs. What that means is that itineraries with multiple flights (especially long flights) can end up costing a lot of points - but short, direct flights can be a really, really good deal. And, British Airways partners with American Airlines (which opens up a lot of availability to the US and Caribbean), as well as Japan Airlines (which opens up some nice availability from the West Coast).

To illustrate that point, here are some examples of what you could get for the 50,000 bonus Avios you'd get after hitting the $5,000 spend threshold.

From Toronto:
  • 5 round-trip tickets to New York or Chicago (9,000 Avios per ticket)
  • 2 round-trip tickets to Miami or Dallas (20,000 Avios per ticket)
  • 2 round-trip tickets to Bermuda (24,000 Avios per ticket)
  • 2 round-trip tickets to LA (25,000 Avios per ticket)
  • Almost 2 round-trip tickets to Cancun, Montego Bay, or Nassau Bahamas (29,000 Avios per ticket)
From Montreal:
  • 5 round-trip tickets to New York (9,000 Avios per ticket)
  • 3 round-trip tickets to Chicago (15,000 Avios per ticket)
  • 2 round-trip tickets to Miami or Dallas (20,000 Avios per ticket)
  • 2 round-trip tickets to Bermuda (24,000 Avios per ticket)
  • Almost 2 round-trip tickets to Cancun, Montego Bay, or Nassau Bahamas (29,000 Avios per ticket)
From Vancouver:
  • 3 round-trip tickets to LA (15,000 Avios per ticket)
  • 2 round-trip tickets to Dallas (20,000 Avios per ticket)
  • 2 round-trip tickets to New York (25,000 per ticket)
  • 1 round-trip ticket to Tokyo (50,000 Avios per ticket)

Check out the Avios search engine over at the Wandering Aramean to explore other options.

You still need to pay the taxes and fees on the tickets (which aren't insignificant at many Canadian airports), but 50,000 Avios can still go a long, long way toward covering the cost of your flights!
